Património Industrial para o Futuro
Cultura Material, Cultura Científica: Património Industrial para o Futuro (Material Culture, Scientific Culture: Industrial Heritage for the Future) is a scientific publication that collects several Industrial History papers on a gunpowder factory in Vale de Milhaços, Portugal.
This book is the result of an interdisciplinary research project at Lisbon NOVA University, aiming to preserve industrial heritage, publishing the work of archeology, history and museology researchers.
The body of work expands beyond the book, living as multimedia content. This augmented content is referenced in the book through QR codes, making the book function as a hub that centralises access to the whole public communication of the research project.

The Book Cover
A Capa do Livro
The second book in the “Making a Book” collection – dedicated to industrial bookbinding techniques – and the follow up to The Book Block, this book expands on the most common techniques, decomposing them and adding variation, while still covering all you need to know on book anatomy, materials and industrial production.

Organized in three typologies — single, two-piece, and composite covers —, The Book Cover adds sections on industrial cover making processes. Learning from its predecessor, we started by rethinking the graphic production pipeline in order to optimize its content creation. Whether text or its more complex illustrations, a more expedient and flexible tweaking process was needed. And, during a global pandemic, a tighter process – in editing and communicating – aided in the production.

Power Networks
Daniel Malhão
A commission from REN and the photographer Daniel Malhão, Power Networks is a photographic essay on Portugal’s energy infrastructure. The book consists in an array of visual microstories, where generation, transformation and location highlight the travelling nature of electricity.
In spite of the instant nature of energy, Power Networks is a slow-paced book: its large format, sparse spreads and contemplative pauses – along with the single weight and size textual support contents – contribute to a careful pacing. Engineering and ingenuity slowly reveal themselves as the protagonist, as a mark imprinted in the monumentality of the machinery and infrastructure.

Pensar a Cidade,
2005 — 2015
A crítica da crítica
Pensar a Cidade is a collection of articles on urban planning from João Pedro Costa at Jornal Arquitecturas, juxtaposed with commentaries by other members of the Portuguese architecture community.
This juxtaposition is emphasised by featuring both article and response in the same spread, each on its page. To respond to such a brief, a larger format was required, in order to accommodate two columns per page. On the other hand, the format shouldn’t extend to a volume that would require a table to be read, since the body size required to accommodate the length of the articles lives around handheld sizes.
Also – and due to the reasons above –, a flexible cover and a generous opening was picked. A Smyth-sewn four-crease paperback cover, offset printed in metallic brown on dark grey paper, a subtle but lush sheen that reacts to the viewing angle. The book block is printed in black on a yellowish tinted paper, to minimise glaring during extensive reading.
