Such a hefty volume called for some peculiar design choices. Its weight and wideness makes its storage likely to be in a lower shelf, so the information that usually lives on the cover and spine was stamped in the head edge. While looking from above, this face is more exposed than the spine.
Handling and leafing is better done on lap, with the aid of thighs to counterbalance the volume. The flexible vinyl covering of the Smyth sewn spine keeps the opening flexible and flat, in order to accommodate such an odd way of reading.

INCM Book Collection
Imprensa Nacional’s Itálica is a collection of comparative translations of Italian classics.
With the brief of designing a “modern classic”, we began our research with the purpose of translating early Italian printing motifs to contemporary techniques.
To this effect – and starting with typography –, we settled on the typeface Galaxie Copernicus, itself based on Aldus Moretius’ work. Also in tandem with sixteenth century printing, only the roman and italic cuts were used, discarding bold cuts, all at the same body size. Hierarchies between paratexts are achieved by typographic notation and case, not by colour.
Transitions between sections rely on the metaphor of a theatre play’s curtain swipes, as well as the fade in and out of light. For this effect, we developed software to produce vector gradients that emulate mezzotints grain, modulating each dot in shape, amplitude and frequency.
The approach to the covers was two-fold: graphic and tactile. Graphic elements are analogues of early Venetian printing, inspired by frontispieces and Roman monumental writing. The covers’ embossings are marbled paper textures, converting visual information to a tactile one.

Supreme Court of Justice
This special edition of a Revista, a semi-annually publication of Portugal’s Supreme Court of Justice, commemorates the 190th anniversary from the court’s founding.
The publication features eight articles on the Court’s activity throughout its existence and in several of its aspects: law, architecture, history, archive, democratization and women’s rights.
Operating since 1833, shortly after the introduction of a constitutional monarchy in the country, the Supreme Court of Justice is currently the highest court of law in the Portuguese Republic.

We knew from the start that we wanted a dark chocolate spot colour. Unable to find anything satisfactory in colour catalogues, we bought bars from several chocolate brands, between 70 and 95% cocoa.
We chose one. So we took it to the printer and asked them to tune the ink’s colour to it. And to eat them afterwards.

Gráfica Maiadouro Sessenta Anos
Gráfica Maiadouro: Sessenta Anos is a jubilee book, commemorating Maiadouro’s sixtieth anniversary. The history of the company is established through three narrative devices: textual, client work and archival documentation.
The text tells the story of Maiadouro’s struggles, innovations and victories, from its humble beginnings to the industrial powerhouse it is today. The culmination of a collection of interviews.
The most emblematic client work, strongly tied to the technical challenges that pushed Maiadouro forward, was extensively photographed, in order to standardise and distinguish the images from the archival work. Also, it showcases the details that makes Maiadouro one of the finest printing houses in Europe.
